GABRIEL JACKSON ET AL

A retrospect of Hillier’s years with his vocal group, this disc presents 11 contemporary works. Most impressive is Jackson’s L’Homme armé, an antiwar meditation deriving from a 15th-century song, and a harmonic triumph. There are two sweet Skempton pieces and two by Reich (including Hillier’s adapation of Clapping Music). Kevin Volans’s Walking Song — an organ solo from Christopher Bowers-Broadbent — makes a chirpy interlude. Paul Driver
